"The Nine Situations" describe the stages clients traverse at the Clay Field from the moment they enter the therapy room, how they sit down in front of the field, how they find safety and orient, how they connect with the material and then engage with it.

Depending on the emotional state of a client the clay will be perceived as inviting or hostile, pliable or unyielding. The psychological needs of a client will shape the clay into a landscape, a loving parent, a source of empowerment, a space to simply be; or the encounter may turn into the confrontation with a traumatic event or become a transpersonal, existential quest.

Deuser discusses these Nine Situations as a way to successfully read a client’s initial movements with the purpose that the therapist becomes capable to support a fulfilling session.
